Commemorative Monuments and Tombstones
The monuments and tombstones in Vilnius Cathedral have changed many times. As some memorials deteriorated, they were replaced by others. There are currently over 40 memorial plaques in the cathedral in various languages. They are all dedicated to people who held high office in the state or in the Church, dukes, bishops and nobles, who supported the cathedral with various endowments. Not all the writers of the epitaphs are known. The last lines of some epitaphs pay tribute to the relatives and associates of the deceased who organised the burial and the plaque. Memorial plaques remind us of the most remarkable moments in the country’s Christian history.
