The Death of St Stanislaus
The Death of St Stanislaus by Smuglewicz Franciszek, painted in 1799. This 11th-century Bishop of Cracow denounced the King of Poland Bolesław II the Bold for his cruelty and injustice, and eventually excommunicated him. On learning about this, the king had him killed during Mass. In the painting, angels bring down a martyr’s crown from the sky for the dying saint.
