St John Nepomucen Stands up to King Wenceslaus
The painting St John Nepomucen Stands up to King Wenceslaus by Franciszek Smuglewicz hangs on the Wollowicz chapel’s west wall. The King of Bohemia Wenceslaus IV wanted to appropriate the treasures of the Church. He also interrogated Canon John Nepomucen of Prague, who was the queen’s confessor, suspecting the queen of infidelity. John Nepomucen refused to break the seal of the confessional, and for this, according to the story, he was thrown off the Charles Bridge into the River Vltava. St John Nepomucen is one of the most venerated saints in Lithuania.
